Mattress BS 7177 Test

7177 is the core standard in the UK for the flame retardancy performance of furniture such as mattresses and bed frames. Its primary objective is to ensure fire safety in specific usage scenarios by classifying different levels of risk. According to the standard requirements, the testing level for mattresses must be selected based on their intended end use, corresponding to the appropriate risk category.

The standard categorizes risk levels into four grades: low risk, medium risk, high risk, and very high risk:

Based on the above table, it is recommended:

• For household use: Choose the low-risk level to meet general fire safety requirements.

• For hotels/public places: The medium-risk level is mandatory due to public safety regulations.

• For hospitals/: Select high or very high risk levels based on specific areas; for example, hospital wards require high-risk testing.

Additionally, it should be noted that this standard does not apply to upholstered seating in vehicles.

Ignition Source Types and Testing Intensity:

Different risk levels correspond to different testing standards and ignition sources.

• Low-risk ignition sources: Smoldering cigarette (EN 597-1), simulated match flame (EN 597-2)

• Medium-risk ignition sources: All low-risk ignition sources, plus pine kindling 5

• High-risk ignition sources: All low-risk ignition sources, plus pine kindling 7

• Very high-risk ignition sources: All high-risk ignition sources, plus additional ignition sources
